All around Glenorchy, you will fund an abundance of walks and walking tracks. Whatever your fitness level and available time, we have walking tracks that will suit. Here’s our Top Five Day Walks in Glenorchy:

#1 The start of the Routeburn Track

This has to be on the list, as the Routeburn is one of the Great New Zealand Walks. If you don't have a few days to tramp the whole track, then at least experience the start with a 4-6 hour walk - you won't be disappointed, and you’ll feel like you’ve at least experienced one of the very best Great Walks, rich in native flora and birdlife

From the Routeburn Shelter Hut, take this popular day walk up to Routeburn Flats Hut, or if you feel you would like more of a challenge then the extra 3 km onwards to the Routeburn Falls waterfall is well worth a visit.

#2 Mt Judah Track

This walk rewards you with amazing views of Lake Wakatipu and the Humboldt Mountains within the first 10 minutes. Walk up to the historic battery for about 30 minutes and stop for a picnic with a view, or continue up towards Bonnie Jean Hut if you’re after a long hike. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle, a hat, and sunscreen as there are no trees along this hike. Time: 30 minutes to the battery, another 2.5 hours to Bonnie Jean Hut – one way.

Easy access from Camp Glenorchy, just a 5-minute drive from Glenorchy, the track starts at the carpark at Whakaari Conservation Area.

#3 Lake Sylvan

This well-defined track can be done as a loop. It leads through old moraine river terraces and tall red beech / tawhairaunui forest to the beautiful Lake Sylvan, home to brown trout and numerous small native fish. Enjoy stunning views over surrounding mountains including glimpses of Mt Earnslaw / Pikirakatahi from the viewing platform before retracing your steps or returning via the 1920s tramline loop.

This is a great walk morning walk as it only takes around 2 hours to complete and the birdsong is incredible so keep your eyes open for native birds such as robins, fantail and riflemen along the way.

#4 The Glenorchy Lagoon Track

From the Glenorchy waterfront this gentle, well-formed track follows the flood bank around the Rees River and Lagoon Creek and back through the Glenorchy Golf Course.

A great place for a picnic with strategically placed tables and benches overlooking views of Mt Earnslaw. Glenorchy Lagoon Walkway offers excellent opportunities to view bird life, including black swans, paradise ducks and Canada Geese as the boardwalk traverses wetlands near Glenorchy.

This is a great walk with kids and for those less sure on their feet, and a great way to soak up the magic of Glenorchy.

#5 Invincible Mine

This awesome 3 hours return walk introduces you to the rich mining heritage of the area. Part of the Otago Goldfields Park, the walk gradually works its way up above the snow line so you get some great uninterrupted views of the Rees Valley and Mt Earnslaw.

From Rees Road, this well-formed historic walking track is for people with moderate fitness and abilities. You can see remains of the water wheel and a unique set of seven berdans (large, revolving cast iron bowls in which the ore was ground) are also visible. Miners built the track in the early 1880s, but you can now enjoy it without the sweat and tears they invested.
