Get Outside and Explore
The Glenorchy area has an abundance of walking tracks, hikes and tramps. Whether you are looking to do a day walk or you are planning on walking the famous Routeburn track, Camp Glenorchy is the perfect place to start or end your journey.
The Routeburn track is a world-renowned walk that is located in Mount Aspiring National Park and Fiordland National Park. It is considered one of the Great Walks of NZ and is a 32km walk from start to finish. It will take you through enchanting ancient beech forest and an impressive river gorge dotted with jade-green pools. The landscape consists of mountain peaks, alpine basins, pristine lakes, cascading waterfalls, luxuriant forest and turquoise rivers. This is a great walk and will tick the box for magical views. The track can be done in 3-4 days or you can just walk in for the day up to the Routeburn Flats or Falls and back the same way.
Lake Rere / Greenstone-Caples
If you’re looking for a full-day out exploring nature, or a multi-day adventure, this is the perfect option for you. The Greenstone area is only a 45min drive from Glenorchy and is one of our hidden gems. Choose between the Lake Rere loop track for a fun day-walk or the Greenstone-Caples for a multi-day hike. Both tracks take you through various landscapes including native beech forest, stunning turquoise waters, and hidden swimming holes, and amazing views of Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains. The Lake Rere track takes about 5 hours and the Greenstone-Caples can be done in 4 days. They are both loop tracks.
